My History Homework

• Students will interpret writing prompts.
• Students will review information related to our country’s beginnings.
• Students will demonstrate knowledge of our country’s beginnings.
• Students will analyze issues surrounding the states.

Today, students discussed writing prompts to prepare for writing essays.

Students were given a brief amount of time for review.

Students took the first test of the year.

Students, with the time remaining, worked on an article related to states’ rights issues.

States’ Rights

We have recently talked about what powers the state governments have vs. the national government.
Summarize the states’ rights issue in this article in a paragraph and then answer the following questions.
Do you think Montana should be allowed to do what it wants?  Why or why not?  Why might Montana have more luck than California did?  Finally, think of another current event issue that it is important to you and explain why or why not you feel it should be left up to the states to determine what to do about the issue.

Homework: Finish issues assignment for next class

Objectives:

• Students will demonstrate knowledge of The Silence.
• Students will discuss interpretations of the unit, “Who Shot William Robinson.”
• Students will demonstrate knowledge of American History.

Today, students took a short five question quiz over the reading The Silence.

Students then discussed interpretations of the unit over Who Shot William Robinson and learned what historians came up with for alternate endings to the murder mystery.

Finally, students took a pre-test over what they remembered from American History and discussed the answers.

Homework:  “Review” The Silence as we will be working with it more extensively next week 

Objectives:

• Students will discuss the Bill of Rights.
• Students will review knowledge related to the U.S. beginnings.

Students were given ~35 minutes to finalize their Bill of Rights activity.

Students discussed their assignment about the Bill of Rights.

Students were then given back their last quiz and discussed the format of next week’s test.

Homework: STUDY!!

Objectives:

• Students will discuss documents related to William Robinson’s murder.
• Students will demonstrate knowledge of this trial.

Today, students “taught” their document assigned to them last Thursday and Friday to other people and filled in the following document whathappenedaccordingtowhom.doc as they worked.

Students briefly discussed their documents as a large group.

Students then wrote essays about the following topic.  “Analyze the death of William Robinson and include your interpretation of what happened based on the information you assessed.”

Homework:  The Silence reading is due next class period!!!

Objectives:

• Students will discuss the work it took to write the Constitution.
• Students will review pop quizzes.
• Students will analyze the Bill of Rights.

Today, students finished taking notes  about the drafting and ratifying of the Constitution at the convention in Philadelphia.  The instructions were distributed constconvent.docand links were given on School Loop.  Textbooks were also appropriate for this assignment.

Students received a study guide for the test next Tuesday and Wednesday.

Homework: Start studying!  Research will be checked next class period, Bill of Rights activity will be wrapped up next clas period

Objectives:

• Students will discuss their group document.
• Students will assess their document for OPVL.

Today, students took a little time to review their assigned document.

Students then got into groups and answered questions related to their particular document.

Finally, students were shown their homework assignment for the end of the week, emailed to them last Friday.

Homework:  Read “The Silence” loopmailed to you last Friday by this Thursday (hour 5) or Friday (hour 7)

Objectives:

• Students will discuss Shays’ Rebellion and its importance.
• Students will demonstrate knowledge of the beginnings of America.
• Students will discuss the details of the Constitution.

Today, students discussed Shays’ Rebellion and explained why this event was so important in our country’s history.

Students took a quiz over our country’s beginnings.

Students bookmarked a few links on their laptops for future use.

Homework:  read Chapter 5.2

• Students will discuss the origin, purpose, value, and limitation of documents.
• Students will determine the facts of a court case.

Today, students discussed and watched a few video clips related to eyewitness testimony and where to look up historical documents.

Students then discussed what it means to assess a document for its origin, purpose, value and limitations.

Finally students took some time to read a transcript of a trial that took place in mid-19th century Canada.

Homework:  Finsh transcript, read the document assigned to your group in School Loop

Objectives:

• Students will discuss the positives and minuses of the first U.S. government.
• Students will interpret the Northwest Land Ordinance.
• Students will analyze Shays’ Rebellion.

Today, students began reviewing the Revolutionary War by playing a game and answering questions about it.

Students then took PowerPoint notes over the first United States government, the Articles of Confederation.

Students read about and discussed the Northwest Land Ordinance, the biggest benefit of the A.C.

Students got into groups of 2 and went to a website about Shays’ Rebellion, answering the following questions on a notebook piece of paper (one per group).

1. Why did the Tories call the United States the “disunited states” at this time?

2. Washington’s quote… “I am beyond mortification…” means what during this time in our nation’s history?

3. Why were veterans upset at this time?

4. Why were farmers upset at this time?

5. What was Daniel Shays attempting to accomplish?

6. Why did the national gov’t struggle to stop him?

7. What did Shays’ Rebellion achieve?

8. “The rebellion in Massachusetts is a warning, gentlemen,” cautioned James Madison, proponent of the Virginia plan. What did Madison mean by this statement?

Homework: Finish Shays’ questions, study, quiz over all we have discussed next class period
